Best Day Trips from Rotorua: Hobbiton, Waitomo, Taupō & More

Rotorua's location is its secret weapon. Sitting almost dead-centre in the upper North Island, the city is within easy reach of some of New Zealand's most famous attractions, from the Shire of Middle-earth to a galaxy of glowworms and the country's most-visited waterfall. You can base yourself in Rotorua, enjoy its geysers, lakes and adventure activities, and still tick off the region's biggest bucket-list stops on day trips.

Here are the best day trips from Rotorua, roughly in order of how far you will drive, plus the easiest way to do them without a car.

Hobbiton Movie Set (Matamata, ~1 hr)

The closest blockbuster on the list. The Hobbiton Movie Set near Matamata is the real, lovingly maintained film location from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, set on a working 1,250-acre sheep and beef farm. Guided tours wind through 44 hobbit holes, the Mill and the Party Tree, and finish with a complimentary drink at the Green Dragon Inn. It is about an hour from Rotorua, and because tours run on timed departures, you should book your slot before you set off. This is the single most popular day trip from the city for good reason.

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland (~30 min)

You do not have to drive far for one of the best. Just 30 minutes south, Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is the most colourful geothermal park in the country, home to the vivid orange-rimmed Champagne Pool, the bright green Devil's Bath, and the Lady Knox Geyser, which erupts daily at 10:15am. Well-formed boardwalks make it an easy half-day even with kids, and it pairs neatly with Rainbow Mountain or the nearby mud pools.

Huka Falls & Taupō (~1 hr)

An hour south of Rotorua, Huka Falls is one of New Zealand's most-visited natural attractions, and it is free. Here the entire Waikato River is funnelled through a narrow rock canyon and explodes over an 11-metre drop, around 220,000 litres of brilliant blue-white water every second. Combine it with the lakeside town of Taupō, with its cafes, the lake itself and the option of a jet boat or a soak in nearby hot streams, for a full and easy day.

Mount Maunganui & Tauranga (~1 hr)

When you want a change from steam and forest, the Bay of Plenty coast is about an hour away. Mount Maunganui offers the iconic Mauao summit walk with sweeping ocean views, long white-sand surf beaches, and a lively, café-filled town. It is the perfect day trip when the weather is fine and the kids want a beach.

Tarawera Falls (Kawerau, ~1.5 hrs)

For a hidden gem, the spectacular Tarawera Falls pours straight out of a rhyolite cliff face deep in the Tarawera Forest near Kawerau. The walk to the lower falls is short and easy, but access is via private forestry roads, so you need a permit (around NZ$10 per vehicle, available from the Kawerau i-SITE or online) and the road is only open on weekends and public holidays. Plan it as a half-day forest-drive-and-walk adventure, and check the access rules before you go.

Waitomo Glowworm Caves (~2 hrs)

The furthest of the classic day trips, and worth it. About two hours west of Rotorua, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves have drawn visitors for more than 130 years. The highlight is a silent boat ride through the glowworm grotto, gliding beneath thousands of tiny blue-green lights in total darkness. The tour also takes in the cavern's "Cathedral" chamber. Because it is a longer drive, many people combine Waitomo with Hobbiton on a single big day out.
