    Rotorua's cafe scene clusters on Tutanekai and Eruera Streets in the CBD, with two standouts sitting out of town on the lake edge and near the Kaituna. Most kitchens run 7am to around 2:30-3pm and stop serving hot food well before they close the doors, so aim for before 1:30pm. Weekend brunch between 9:30am and 11:30am is the busiest hour of the week and few cafes take bookings. Expect $ to $$ for brunch.

    Where is the best coffee in Rotorua?

    The CBD block of Tutanekai Street is where the specialty-coffee cafes concentrate, and the long-running institutions there are the most reliable pour. For the best setting rather than the best cup, the lakeside cafes at Ōhinemutu and out at Okere Falls are worth the short drive.

    What time do Rotorua cafes close?

    Most close between 2:30pm and 3pm, and many stop serving cooked breakfast and lunch 30 minutes before that. A handful of cafe-bars carry on into the evening. If you want brunch, do not arrive after 1:30pm.

    Do Rotorua cafes take bookings?

    Mostly no — the CBD brunch cafes are walk-in. Larger groups of six or more should ring ahead, especially on a weekend, and the cafes attached to restaurants or hotels are the ones most likely to hold a table.

    Are Rotorua cafes good for families?

    Generally yes. Several of the long-running CBD cafes run kids' menus and high chairs, and the out-of-town spots have outdoor space where children can move around. The smaller specialty-coffee rooms are tight for prams.
