    Where should I eat dinner in Rotorua?

    Eat Streat, the covered and heated stretch of Tutanekai Street, is the default — it puts a dozen restaurants and bars within one block, it is sheltered year-round, and it is walkable from most central hotels. Away from Eat Streat, the standalone bistros on Haupapa and Fenton Streets and the restaurant at the top of the gondola are the other places locals send visitors.

    Do I need to book a restaurant in Rotorua?

    Yes for Friday and Saturday nights year-round, and for any night between December and March. Rotorua's better restaurants are small and the city takes a large tour-group volume, so walk-ins after 7pm on a weekend often mean a wait.

    What food is Rotorua known for?

    Hāngī — food cooked in an earth oven or, uniquely in Rotorua, steamed in natural geothermal steam boxes. It is served at the Māori cultural experiences rather than in restaurants, so it is a separate booking from a normal dinner. Beyond that, the region is known for freshwater trout, which by law cannot be sold in restaurants but can be cooked for you if you catch it with a guide.

    How late can you eat in Rotorua?

    Most kitchens take last orders around 9pm, and midweek in winter some close earlier. The Eat Streat bars and the pub kitchens run latest. If you are arriving late, ring ahead rather than assuming.
