The hot pools are a public bathing complex you turn up to and soak in. A day spa is a booked treatment — massage, facial, mud or body ritual — in a private room, usually with pool or lounge access included before or after. Several venues offer both, which is why the names overlap.

Several Rotorua spas run rituals grounded in rongoā, traditional Māori healing, using native plant extracts and local geothermal mud and minerals, sometimes alongside a mirimiri-style massage. The operators that do this are generally explicit about the tikanga behind it — ask, and they will explain the sequence before you start.
