Rain is not a problem in Rotorua — it is arguably an upgrade, because cold wet air makes the geothermal steam far more dramatic and the hot pools far more appealing. If you want to be genuinely indoors, the city has an entertainment complex, an indoor climbing gym, a cinema and the spa complexes. Hot pools and spas first — rain genuinely improves them. Then the indoor entertainment complex, the indoor climbing gym and the cinema. The geothermal parks stay open in rain and look better in it, so long as you have a raincoat and proper footwear for wet boardwalks.
Very few. Geothermal parks, hot pools, rafting, zorbing and the cultural experiences all run in rain. Scenic flights are the main thing weather actually cancels, and gondola operations can pause in high wind rather than rain. Check with the operator on the day rather than assuming.
The entertainment complex with bowling, arcade and indoor karting is the standard wet-weather family answer, the indoor climbing gym takes children with supervision, and the cinema covers the afternoon. The family pool at the big thermal complexes is the other reliable option.
Yes. Cold damp air makes steam vastly more visible, so photographs are better and the parks feel more dramatic. Wear proper footwear — the boardwalks and gravel paths get slippery — and expect fewer people.
