There are five tracks of varying speed, from the gentle Tiki Tour to the fast Twister. Little kids ride in a tandem cart with an adult, while older children who reach 110cm can take the wheel solo. ZORB Rotorua

Just down the hill, ZORB Rotorua is the original home of the Rotorua-invented Zorb, where you roll downhill inside a giant inflatable ball. Agrodome

The Agrodome in Ngongotaha is a New Zealand classic and has been running for over 50 years. The National Kiwi Hatchery Aotearoa

Also at Ngongotaha, the National Kiwi Hatchery Aotearoa is billed as the largest and most successful kiwi hatchery in the world. Curious kids (ages five and up) get to see real kiwi eggs and chicks, peek into the nocturnal house and learn how the team helps New Zealand's national bird survive. Rotorua Duck Tours

For something different, Rotorua Duck Tours uses genuine amphibious WWII landing craft that drive through town and then splash straight down into the lakes. Velocity Valley Adventure Park

For families with older kids and teens chasing a thrill, Velocity Valley in Ngongotaha bundles five adrenaline rides in one spot, including the Swoop human swing, the Freefall Xtreme wind-tunnel skydiving simulator and the Agrojet jet-sprint ride. Mitai Māori Village

An evening at Mitai Māori Village is one of the most memorable things a family can do in Rotorua. Rotorua gets its share of rain, and Motion Entertainment on Te Ngae Road is the answer: New Zealand's largest indoor entertainment centre, with tenpin bowling, laser tag, an indoor trampoline park, a ninja course, mini golf, VR and a big arcade. Kuirau Park (free)
